Well, this past Valentine’s Week will go down as our most memorable ever!! My goodness, we experienced a historic winter storm that brought sleet, freezing rain, snow and ice over a 3 day period. Which is bad anytime, but especially on one of the busiest weeks of the year for florists. Thankfully, we were able to keep the business running all week by answering the phones remotely (Wednesday & Thursday) and keeping up with production in the flower barn. All while the entire state was basically shut down with schools and businesses closed and the Department of Transportation urging folks to stay off the road due to the dangerous road conditions.
We were not able to get out to make deliveries on Wednesday and Thursday, which put us behind for the big day on Friday. Also, the two rental vans we had reserved were not able to be delivered due to the winter storm. In addition, we had to delay deliveries about 2 hours on Friday, while we waited for the ice to melt in order to keep our drivers safe.
Thanks to some awesome teamwork, we were able to get all of our deliveries completed between the hours of 10am-5:30pm on Valentine’s Day. As the ice began the melt, it turned into slush and then mud. Even our customers had to trudge through the “mess” to shop and pick up their arrangements in the flower barn.
Our phones and internet were down for a brief period of time on Thursday morning but thanks to Russell Frazier at Windstream, we were back up and running within a couple hours! We also need to give a big shout out to Waterway Apartments. They brought us PIZZA! What a blessing. So kind and thoughtful of them!
We are so thankful for our wonderful customers and their patience and understanding during this crazy week! We also want to thank all our team members that came together and helped us get everything done. We couldn’t do it without them!
Let’s hope next year is not so stressful! 🙂
